From the programme notes
In this conference we talk about the causes and consequences of the conflicts that have brought the world to where it is, conflicts that grow harder to resolve with every day. It is a clash of two opposite ideas of the world and of the human being.
We do not want to divide them into “West” and “East”: both worlds are made of very different countries, politics and faiths. We trace the conflict back to two first ideas, religious traditionalism and humanist rationalism. A Belgian colleague once joked that two forces are at war, Allah and Coca-Cola. It is a joke, of course. Yet, as Polonius says in Hamlet, though this be madness, yet there is method in it.
